Better Things" Season 2 Premiere Recap and Review. Season 2 of the popular television series “Better Things” kicked off with its premiere episode on September 1. It was a party that Sam pulled out all the stops for. Great food, live music, the kids having fun playing a game of Truth of Dare, couples recently divorced and Max’s new boyfriend. It was a fun filled way to start off the new season, with a few surprises.
Growing up too fast? The Fox family has gone through a year of changes, and more than anyone, sixteen- year- old Max. The “A Man For Max” episode presents her new boyfriend, who just happens to be 3. She first met Arturo at a high school play. He was a guest of Sam’s friend Macy at the event. The meeting scene was humorous with Arturo clutching his chest and falling to the ground in a grand gesture that let Max know he thought it was cool that she directed the production.

He gave her a taste of dramatic acting that pulled on her heart strings and kicked off her interest in the older man. Sam’s take on the romance. Sam makes it obvious that she’s not pleased about Max’s new flame. She realizes that she won’t be able to stop her from seeing him, so she struggles to accept Max as being a part of Sam’s life, until she spies an opportunity that she can use to her advantage. Arturo’s brother Pedro is at the party and he has been giving her some creepy looks. This could be the chance that she was waiting for.
Sam springs into action and begins flirting with him, just within eyeshot of Max. It paid off in spades as Max couldn’t handle the thought of her mom flirting with the younger brother of her boyfriend. Max wasn’t totally convinced that her relationship with Arturo was a good idea to begin with. Now Max is the one with the problem. Max takes the initiative to do something about the flirtations and interrupts the pair, pulling her mother aside. She confesses that she is unhappy with Arturo. This heartwarming scene shows us that Max has gained a depth of insight that signals the progression towards true maturity.
She tells her mother that she needs her help to regain control over her life. Sam contributes to the scene with some solid parenting as she comforts her daughter, then sends her to her room. Mama is getting ready to plow the road. Sam didn’t need to be asked for help twice.
With Max, safely out of the room, he cleans house. Arturo and Pedro are quickly kicked out of the house and she tells them she will call the police if they try to come near Max again. We see her fighting spirit here and while she doesn’t always make the right call when it comes to parenting, her heart is in the right place. Meanwhile, a side story is taking place. The kids who were playing upstairs were oblivious to what was going on in the lower levels of the house. Duke and her girlfriends were engaging in a game of Truth or Dare.

She’s the one pushing her buddies to accept a variety of dares. The game took on a strange and adult theme. One of the dares took the game way over the top as the unfortunate girlfriend of Duke was talked into yelling the word “penis” in front of everybody at the party that was going on downstairs. Duke isn’t really held accountable this time around, but it’s obvious to viewers that they are taking the character in a direction that may require parental intervention at some point in the future. We see Frankie and her new buddy Jason helping Sam clean up after the party. It seems that she is doing much better as the new season kicks off. We’re not clear on her chosen gender yet, so it seems appropriate to refer to her as she until we hear otherwise.
Phyllis is still hurling insults at her, but it doesn’t seem to get her down, especially after the fantastic musical performance she delivered at the party.
