The Handmaid's Tale - Wikipedia. The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian novel[2] by Canadian author Margaret Atwood.[3][4] The book was originally published in 1. Set in a near- future New England, in a totalitarian, Christian theonomy that has overthrown the United States government.[5] The novel is based around the journey of the handmaid Offred, an emphasis on the possessive form "of Fred," as handmaids are forbidden to use their birth names and must echo the male, or master, for whom they serve. The Handmaid's Tale explores themes of women in subjugation to misogyny in a patriarchal society and the various means by which these women gain individualism and independence. The novel's title echoes the component parts of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, which is a series of connected stories ("The Merchant's Tale", "The Parson's Tale", etc.).[6]The Handmaid's Tale is structured into two parts, night and other various events. This novel can be interpreted as a double narrative, Offred's tale and the Handmaid's tales.
The night sections are solely about Offred, and the other sections (shopping, waiting room, household, etc.) are the stories that describe the possible life of every Handmaid, though from the perspective of Offred. In many of these sections, Offred jumps between past and present as she retells the events leading up to the fall of women's rights and the current details of her life which she lives. The Handmaid's Tale won the 1.
Governor General's Award and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1. Nebula Award, the 1. Booker Prize, and the 1. Prometheus Award.
The book has been adapted into a 1. Plot summary[edit]The Handmaid's Tale is set in the Republic of Gilead, a theonomicmilitary dictatorship formed within the borders of what was formerly the United States of America.[5]Beginning with a staged attack that kills the President and most of Congress, a fundamentalist Christian Reconstructionist movement calling itself the "Sons of Jacob" launches a revolution and suspends the United States Constitution under the pretext of restoring order.[7] They are quickly able to take away women's rights, largely attributed to financial records being stored electronically and labelled by sex. The new regime, the Republic of Gilead, moves quickly to consolidate its power, including overtaking all pre- existing religious groups, including Christianity, and reorganize society along a new militarized, hierarchical model of Old Testament- inspired social and religious fanaticism among its newly created social classes. In this society, human rights are severely limited and women's rights are even more curtailed. For example, women are forbidden to read, and anyone caught in homosexual acts would be hanged for "Gender Betrayal."The story is told in the first person by a woman called Offred. The character is one of a class of women kept for reproductive purposes and known as "handmaids" by the ruling class in an era of declining births due to sterility from pollution and sexually transmitted diseases.
Offred describes her life during her third assignment as a handmaid, in this case to Fred (referred to as "The Commander"). Interspersed in flashbacks are portions of her life from before and during the beginning of the revolution, when she finds she has lost all autonomy to her husband, her failed attempt to escape with her husband and daughter to Canada, and finally to her indoctrination into life as a handmaid by government- trained women called the Aunts. Offred describes the structure of Gilead's society, including the several different classes of women and their circumscribed lives in the new theonomy. The women are physical segregated by color of clothing—blue, red, green, and stripe—to signify social class and assigned position, ranked highest to lowest. The higher class wives are dressed in blue, handmaids in red, Marthas (cooks and maids) in green, and striped is for the lower class women who essentially do all they can in the domestic sphere.
The Commander is a high- ranking official in Gilead. Although he is supposed to have contact with Offred only during "the ceremony," a ritual of sexual intercourse intended to result in conception and at which his wife is present, he begins an illegal and ambiguous relationship with Offred.
Secret meetings occur between the Commander and Offred in his private study, where not even the Commander's Wife is permitted. The room is filled with books and is considered a private place for the man of the household.
During these meetings, he means to earn her trust by talking to her and playing board games with her, such as Scrabble, which is another offense, as women are not permitted to read, even by spelling. In addition to gaining Offred's trust, the Commander offers her hidden or contraband products, such as old (1. His last gift is finally lingerie, and the Commander offers to take her to a secret brothel run by the government. This brothel is meant to add variety to men's sexuality, as stated is necessary by the Commander.
There Offred meets her long- lost friend, Moira, and Moira explains everything she can in full. There are several types of women in the brothel, all of which are there by "choice," as they are the women seen to be defiant against the practice of handmaids. If not the brothels, then these women are forced to become Unwomen and work in the colonies outside of society, where they pick up the radioactive waste and die a slow and agonizing death. For the women in the brothels, they are allowed alcohol and drugs, a freedom Offred notes. Though these women are allowed to choose their patrons, it's frowned upon to refuse a man's advances. The Commander's wife, Serena Joy, who lacks any sympathy or kindness for Offred, is seen as a minor antagonist. She is remembered by Offred as someone who supported women's domesticity before the full oppression of women.
Though Offred wants a sense of companionship with her, Serena hates sharing her husband with a handmaid and makes her feelings about Offred very clear. She is a conservative woman who keeps to herself in a stern and strict fashion. Ironically enough, though, Serena also has secret interactions with Offred, arranging for her secretly to copulate with Nick, the Commander's driver, in an effort to get Offred pregnant. In exchange for Offred's cooperation, Serena Joy gives her news of her daughter and a recent photo, whom Offred has not seen since she and her family were captured trying to escape Gilead. After Offred's initial meeting with Nick, they begin to meet more frequently.
Offred discovers she enjoys sex with Nick, despite her indoctrination and her memories of her husband. She shares potentially dangerous information about her past with him. Through Offred's partnering handmaid, a trusted friend called Ofglen, Offred learns of the Mayday resistance, an underground network working to overthrow the Republic of Gilead. Shortly after Ofglen's disappearance (later revealed as a suicide), the Commander's wife finds evidence of the relationship between Offred and the Commander. Offred contemplates suicide.
As the novel concludes, she is being taken away by the secret police, the Eyes of God, known informally as "the Eyes," under alleged orders from Nick. Before she is put in the large black van, Nick tells her that the men are part of the Mayday resistance and that Offred must trust him. Offred does not know if Nick is a member of the Mayday resistance or a government agent posing as one, and she does not know if going with the men will result in her escape or her capture. She enters the van with her future uncertain. The novel concludes with a metafictionalepilogue that explains that the events of the novel occurred shortly after the beginning of what is called "the Gilead Period." The epilogue is "a partial transcript of the proceedings of the Twelfth Symposium on Gileadean Studies" written in 2.
